What Can Cause Sudden Sweating?

Sudden sweating (sometimes called hot flashes) can be caused by many different things. Some of the common causes are:

diseases of the brain, such as Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease;

certain medications, including antibiotics and beta blockers;

head trauma; and

a stroke.4-6 However, almost any condition that affects your nervous system can cause sudden sweating. Other possible causes include:7-9 infectious diseases such as Lyme disease;10 drugs used to treat mood disorders such as tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), lithium salts, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs);11 and certain rare genetic conditions like neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1).12 Although these conditions may cause sudden inexplicable night sweats in some people, most cases of unexpected night sweats result from a combination of factors.
