What Can Cause Excessive Sweating?

A: Excessive sweating can be caused by a variety of conditions, including: thyroid disease, diabetes mellitus (especially type 1), or hyperthyroidism; systemic lupus erythematosus; fibromyalgia; chronic fatigue syndrome; and pheochromocytoma.1 The presence of any one of these conditions may cause excessive sweating.

Excessive sweating is also caused by medications such as phenothiazines, phenytoin, carbamazepine, valproic acid and lithium carbonate. There are several other conditions that cause sweating to occur at inappropriate times in the day or night, including anxiety disorders such as panic disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder.2 Although many people believe that emotional problems cause their sweatiness it is important for physicians to rule out possible causes based on a full evaluation so they can treat the underlying condition instead of trying to “treat” the skin problem alone.”3
