You also need to ask if the mother smoked. If so, you’ll want her to quit as soon as possible. You can find more about smoking in pregnancy here.
The placenta, which is attached to the uterine wall by blood vessels, is responsible for nourishing your unborn baby during pregnancy. It filters the blood that passes through it and releases nutrients into your baby’s bloodstream directly after birth via umbilical cord blood circulation. The placenta makes hormones that are passed on from mother to child called placental derived human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and placental protein-1(PAPP-A). If these levels are high or low in an expectant mother, there could be problems with the fetus or newborn at birth such as underweight babies who may not thrive due to lack of extra calories needed for rapid growth postnatally. The hCG antibody test measures this level before labor begins thus making it one of the first tests used during pregnancy screening.
