The nicotine patch is intended to be worn 24 hours a day, and sometimes the skin can get sweaty. Nicotine patches are designed to release their nicotine slowly over time (the way you’d use a patch for other kinds of pain). You may notice that your skin feels sticky or oily after wearing the patch for several days in a row. This is because the patches contain an oil-like substance called propylene glycol. The oils from your body help keep them moist and stickier than they would be otherwise—but usually not enough to cause problems with sweat issues. It’s best not to wash off the petroleum-based, nonsticky stuff on your skin unless it starts causing irritation or discomfort.
