Reminder - OR-Live.com Presents: Hope for Excessive Sweating: Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital to Webcast, LIVE, a Hyperhidrosis Procedure
Market Wire, January, 2005
Excessive sweating, known as hyperhidrosis, is a rare but treatable problem. It refers to people who sweat profusely when they are in normal activities and not sweat-producing activities like exercise or warm temperatures.
It is most often seen on the hands, but also the feet, arm pit and face. For most people with hyperhidrosis, it is treatable in less than one hour with minimal complications that allow the patient to return to work the next day.
"Most people do not realize there is a way to treat excessive sweating. The people we see have had this their entire lives," said John E. Langenfeld, MD, Chief of General Thoracic Surgery at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, which includes one of the few centers in New Jersey to specialize in hyperhidrosis treatment.
Often, those seeking treatment are young adults who are embarrassed by the condition. "A lot of people come to us because it is affecting their job or social situation. Fortunately, a proven minimally invasive surgery allows them to get back to their lives quickly and with little complications," said Dr. Langenfeld, who is also an Assistant Professor of Surgery at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and moderator of the webcast.
Video-assisted thoracic sympathectomy uses a fiber-optic camera and instrument to identify and disrupt the sympathetic nerve chain that appears to be linked to hyperhidrosis. Using general anesthetic, two very small incisions are made under each armpit to allow entry to disrupt the nerve. Each side takes approximately 20 minutes.
Approximately 98 percent of patients will have complete and permanent relief of sweating from their hands. There may be compensatory sweating elsewhere on the body, but studies have shown the majority of patients are very happy with the procedure and would have the procedure again. Results from the procedure are seen immediately.

"As a little boy, I already had sweaty palms. I was miserable because this condition
had been with me all my life. I dreaded attending church or social gatherings
because it meant I had to face others. Also, I had difficulty handling tools at
work because everything I touched became wet. I am very happy with the result
of my surgery. Thanks for curing my hyperhidrosis. I feel years
younger. I highly recommend Hyperhidrosis Center™ to anyone who is suffering from palmar hyperhidrosis."

"I tried medicines--from Beta Blockers--to lotions--to antipsychotics, but to no avail.
I was using Drysol. At the beginning it was great. I had dry hands for two
weeks in- between doses. Then slowly, the medication started to lose its affect
on me. Instead of applying once every two weeks it was once every two days.
I started to look on the Internet for other alternatives and found the website for the treating hyperhidrosis."
